Jimmy Schroeder reaches 60 years at Open Championships!

Jimmy Schroeder

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - When USBC Hall of Famer Jimmy Schroeder of Tonawanda, N.Y., competed in his first USBC Open Championships, Harry S. Truman was president, cable television made its own debut, the New York Yankees won the first of five consecutive championships and a first-class postage stamp was only 3 cents.

Just 19 years old, Schroeder made the trip to Atlantic City, N.J., for the 1949 Open Championships and bowled as a substitute for an injured bowler, but had no idea if it was something he'd get to experience again.

Nearly six decades later, that first trip has turned into a lifetime journey, and Schroeder added his name to another page in the tournament record books when he made his 60th consecutive Open Championships appearance Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

"You think 60, and that's a lot of years," said Schroeder, a 78-year-old right-hander. "I've been fortunate to have a great family, and my wife, Joyce, and daughter, Cynthia, have always been there to support me. They've been with me during the good and comforted me in my times of defeat and when things weren't going well, and there were many."

Schroeder became the 10th bowler to reach the celebrated milestone and is the first of three bowlers reaching 60 this year in Albuquerque. Three other members of the 60-year club, Les Berry (64), Sylvester Thiel (62) and eight-time titlist Bill Lillard (60) are scheduled to compete in 2008 as they continue their pursuits of late tournament legends Joe Norris and Bill Doehrman, who each competed in 71 Open Championships.

"Certainly the Open Championships has been very important to me," said Schroeder, who has served as an instructor, promoter and pro shop operator. "I started in '49 not knowing what would become of that. But, as the years rolled on, I got more and more involved and became more imbedded in bowling and just continued on every year. Through it all, I have met so many wonderful people from so many different cities."

Another highlight of Schroeder's long and distinguished career at the Open Championships came in 1976 when he rolled a 750 series to claim the Classic Singles crown. In his 60-year career, he has knocked down 107,850 pins and is one of 10 bowlers in the elite 100,000-pin club. Norris tops the list with 123,770. This year, Schroeder posted 545 in team, 533 in singles and 520 in doubles.

Bowling has taken Schroeder all over the United States and to many foreign countries, where he has conducted clinics and participated in exhibitions. It has opened many doors and given him opportunities for which he is grateful.

Whenever possible, he tries to give back to the sport he loves and has served as the International Bowling Director for the Special Olympics since the early 1990s. He also was instrumental in getting the Special Olympics National Unified Bowling Tournament on the opening-week schedule at the Open Championships starting in 1991.

"I guess one of the biggest things I'm proud of is the Special Olympics," Schroeder said. "It's been a wonderful experience. I do a lot of work with them and it makes you feel like you're giving something back. Each year, we have hundreds of Special Olympians compete, and I'm quite proud of the USBC for allowing us to come and use the tournament lanes."

Competing has not been without challenges for Schroeder, who in recent years has had to overcome some major operations, including hip replacement surgery. However, as much as the 60-year milestone means to him, he continues to set new goals for himself.

"I'm not a young guy anymore," Schroeder said. "But I still work out and still practice to try to keep my game up. One of my goals in life is to live long enough to break Joe Norris' record. It would be a wonderful thing to do just for the fun of it. For me, I've got to be doing something in life to keep myself happy. Success in life, no matter what you do, is about doing the best you can. That's what I think I have accomplished by being a pretty good bowler."

Mallwitz gets quick read on Frontier

Mike Mallwitz is 28, the same number of years his family has owned Island Lanes on Grand Island. In all that time, Mallwitz never had set foot in or even laid eyes on Frontier Lanes in Lewiston, which is a mere 15-minute drive away.

Two weeks ago, Mallwitz walked into Frontier for the first time and blew away the field in the qualifying for the Tri-City Masters Tournament. He returned last week to win the title in match play.

I went in and got lined up that first week and it was all over from there, said Mallwitz, who defeated Jim Wolf, 516-388, in the two-game title match last Sunday.

Winning the Tri-City is a big deal in the competition among the Tonawandas, Niagara Falls and Lockport USBC associations, which take turns hosting it. Mallwitz was excited about winning his first Tri-City.

That was awesome, so much fun, said Mallwitz, who runs the pro shop and takes care of the lanes at Island.

Mallwitz bowled a 298 game in the qualifying. In the final he had to come from behind, breaking open a tight match with a 289 game against Wolf. Mallwitz defeated Rob Samborek of Niagara Falls, 513-405, in his semifinal while Wolf was throwing a 300 game in his victory over Pete Maduri of the Tonawandas. Wolf, 57, became the oldest to bowl a 300 in the 17-year history of the tournament.

Mallwitz won $1,000 for his victory and $50 as the high qualifier. Wolf earned $580. Twenty-six of the 79 entrances shared in the $5,700 prize fund.
